Welcome to Cape Breton Island, Canada

If your vacationing in Canada, make sure you visit one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Cape Breton Island. This is my description of things to do and see in Cape Breton from the perspective of a life long resident. I designed it for folks that come visit our beautiful island and only have a few days here. It gives you some idea of one day excursions you can take to various points of interest and get the most out of a short stay. If you have any questions just ask. Make sure you check out the Boating and the Golfing Section.

I have traveled around the globe. I have seen the Canadian and American Rockies, the Andes, the Alps, and the Highlands of Scotland, but for simple beauty, Cape Breton outrivals them all!

Alexander Graham Bell

Cape Breton Island isa rugged littleisland approximately 175 km long by 135 km at its widest point, and is attached to the mainland of Nova Scotia by the Canso Causway. Thereisabout 150, 000 of us Cape Bretoners livingon this island paradise. The island is one of the most beautiful places in the world.International travel magazinessuch as Conde Naste, Travel and Leisure and National Geographic Traveller have votedCape Breton Islandthe Third most beautiful Island in the World and# 1 in the Continental US and Canada.The scenery of the Island is unprecedented. The Cabot Trail is one of its many beauties and wonders, a trip around the Cabot Trail in the fall is an unforgettable experience with a different picture of scenery around every turn in the road.The Cabot Trailwill take youaround the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, its about a 185 miles or 298 km drive. The trail passes through manyreal neatcommunities, each with breathtaking scenery and unbelievable hospitality. The Cape Breton Highlands National Park lies along the Cabot Trail, providinglots ofhiking, camping, kayaking, and whale watching. Make sure you make a stop at Cheticamp on your way around the trail its a great little town with lots of character. Sydney is the islands biggest city with a population of about 25, 000 it has a wonderful waterfront, down at thegovernment wharf where the Joan Harris Pavilion is, you can see the Great Big Giant Fiddle, it was built by a friend of mine, named Cyril Hearn, he can do some amazing stuff with steel, there is actually a song about the fiddle, done by a local comedy show called4 Men in a Tub, its quite funny. If you are coming to the island and you are not travelling around staying at many different locations, Sydney is the best place to make your base camp as there are malls to go to and many bars, restaurants, museums and hotels, and yes, we even got a Casino.

Great One Day Excursions

Louisbourg Waterfront

There are many places to see that arenot too too far from Sydney that you could spend a wholeday at. I would highlyrecommend seeing the Fortress of Louisbourg, its about a 30 minute drive from Sydney, the Fort is a real experience of17th century history, it takes a good bit to see the whole Fort, (note to self) you may want to bring a sweater. The Town of Louisbourg has a beautiful waterfront and there aresome great restaurantsand places to stay.If you get to the Louisbourg Crab Festival from July 31st to Aug.1st, you are sure to enjoy yourself, its two nights of great food and entertainment.(again, bring sweater) In the center of town you will find the Louisbourg Playhouse it is a great place to see someexcellent entertainment through out the summer season. If you are looking to play a round of golf, just a few kilometers before reachingLouisbourg you will find one of the islands newest golf resorts called, The Louisbourg Resort Golf & Spa, it is a 2, 500 acre resort with amagnificent 18-hole championship golf course, complemented by a par 3, 18-hole course, both designed by Nick Faldo.

Baddeck Waterfront

Anothergreat place to go for the day, onlyabout a 40 minute drive from Sydney is the town of Baddeck. Its the small town where Alexander Graham Bell lived. They have an excellent waterfront, there is the Bell Museum to see, and they got a kick ass Golf Course. If your lucky enough to get there by boat thru the Bras d'or Lakes you can see Bells original home, called Beinn Bhreagh. its quite a pad, and the only way to get a peek at it, is if your on a boat, Bell and his wife Mabel are both buried on the property. Take in the 2 Hr. boat cruise on the Bras D'or Lakes aboard the beautiful Staysail Schooner AMOEBA. I enjoyed it immensely, the Captain was entertaining and informative. You will get to see the Bell estate, that can only beseen from the water. The day I was there, the captainfed the Bald Eagles that nest in the area, the eaglessnatched the fish out of the water right in front of us, making for a unique photo opportunity. Its an excellent deal at only 25 bucks.

Glace Bay Waterfront

Another great place to go for the day is the Town of Glace Bay its about a 20 minute drive from Sydney. There are some really neat places to visit there. The town was acoal mining town for many many years, but that time has since past. You can go visit the Miners Museum where you can take an underground tourofa 1932 'room and pillar' mine. The Museum is also home to the famous choir of miners, The Men of the Deeps. If you get a chance to see them, take full opportunity of it, they are very entertaining. Glace Bay is also home to the Marconi National Historic Site. It is located at Table Head, on a spectacular piece of rugged coastline jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean with 18-m (60-ft.) cliffs.It was atthis sitein 1902 thatGuglielmo Marconi, sent the first official wireless message across the Atlantic Ocean to England. If your looking for excellent live entertainment, check to see if anything is playing at the Savoy Theatre, itis a restored 1920's Victorian Show House, its a pretty cool place to see a show of any type, and ya might even see a ghost. If your looking to play a round of golf, on your way to Glace Bay there is aexcellent 18 hole course called The Lingan Golf and Country Club.

If ya wanna take a quick trip to the Rock, a DAY CRUISE on one of the Marine Atlantic Ferries is a blast. Its best, to take the early Ferry from the Terminal in North Sydney. The Ferry takes you to Port-Aux Basques Newfoundland, the ship is in port for about two hours while it is off-loading and loading vehicals.During this time youcan go to shore for a short visit to Port-aux Basques, after your little visit, the same Ferry takes you back to the North Sydney Terminal. The crossing takes aprox 5 to 6 hrs each way. The Ferries themselves are like Cruise Ships (especially the new one) there aregift shops, entertainment, internet accessand lots of things for the kiddies to do. It is an excellent way to spend the day, and to see the beautiful coasts of both Cape Breton and Newfoundland (The Newfoundland Coast is truely spectacular) The Price is a low $42.00 for the return trip (wow).or $28.75 for one way walk-on passage. Don't forget to take your camera. If you walk-on the Ferry and want to stay for a day or two in Port Aux Basques and check out the town. I highly reccommend the Shark Cove Suites. Phone: 709-695-3831 / 8198 Their rates are excellent/ One Bedroom Suite $65.00, Two Bedroom $75.00 (wow) Cable TV/VCR, Fridge, Stove, Microwave and all Cooking Utensils. I had Suite #1, it was beautiful, the owners of the place are very nice folks.Other places to stay in Port Aux Basques can be found here. IfI was't walking.I got around by cab, it was always 6 bucks.

The greatest day excursion of all is the jewel in the crown of Cape Breton Island, a trip around the Cabot Trail, make sure you stop atIngonish Beach for a swim, it looks like something you would see in Hawaii, except the waters a little colder. The Trail not only offers superior scenery, there is also kayaking, biking, hiking, picnicking, swimming, camping, and many shops and restaurants. The area offers both saltwater and freshwater fishing with ocean charters and whale watching tours available. Thevast amountof lakes, ponds and rivers provide excellent salmon and trout fishing from Juneto early October. If you plan to stay the night there are many accommodations in the Ingonish area and along the Trail, the Keltic Lodge and Spa, being the swankiest. If your lookingto playa round of golf inthe Ingonish area, you will find Canada's top public golf courseThe Highlands Links, it is ranked by Golf Magazine asand 64th best in the world.

How to get here and get around in the city

First off, if you need a Travel Agentin the local area, I highly recommend Darcel from Maritime Travel. If you are coming by plane, the Sydney Airport has direct flights from Toronto provided by Westjet, however if you book your flight thru Air Canada or any other carrier, your flight will end at the Halifax International Airport.From there, you candrive toCape Breton, it will likely be alot less expensive than getting the connecting flight to Sydney, and a very nice drive, (aprox.4 hrs). You can also get here by the Acadian Lines Bus, they are very comfortable, and you will get to see our beautiful sceneryduring the drive. If you are coming by boat, you should check outmy Boating Section farther down on the page, it will provide plenty ofinformation on the many Marinas we have along our coast. Once you arrive you can get aroundby either Bus, Taxi or Shuttle. If you are staying in the Sydney area, the CBRM Transit have buses going to the surrounding towns of Glace Bay, New Waterford, North Sydney and Sydney Mines for very reasonable fares. Taxi's in Sydney are very very reasonable, compared to any other city I have ever been to in my life, 10 bucks or lesswill take you almost anywhere in the city you need to go.I personally highly recommend the Pier Taxi (902) 564-6111 they got the very best rates in town. If your want to take an Island Tour, Taxi's or Shuttles can be rented to take you to various places, but renting a car may be less expensive, depending on where you want to go. If you plan to walk or bike anywhere around the island, this handy web site called Gmaps Pedometer will show you the distance of your trip and the shortest route to take.

Elton Johnis Heading to Cape Breton Island

Captain Fantastichimself will be coming toSydneyon Sept.13. This will be quite a treat for us folks here on the Island. Most tickets will be $161.50 tho(looks like I won't be going) I'm da other fella, not Rockafella. It would be pretty cool to see. If anyone out there got a ticket they'd like to give away, pic me pic me mail it to 11 Elmwood Ave. Sydney N.S. B1N-2J2 it would sure be appreciated.

There will be 6, 600 tickets sold. Approximately 800 seats that will be located behind the stage will go for $79, and a small number of seats at the opposite end of the arena from the stage will be sold for $99.75; while all floor, and most of the lower and upper bowl seats will cost $161.50. All prices include tax and service fees.

The bulk of the tickets available are at the high-end price.

This Friday, tickets will be available at www.livenation.com, www.tickets.capebreton.ca, at Centre 200 and Savoy Theatre box offices, or by phone at 564-2200. There is a limit of eight tickets per customer.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Celtic Colors 2011 International Festival

The nine-day festival is set to take place Oct. 7-15 across Cape Breton, and tickets became available for purchase Monday, through the festival box office, located at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney, online at www.celtic-colours.com, and by phone at 567-3000 or 1-888-355-7744.

The Celtic Colours International Festival started in 1997, since then hundreds of Celtic musicians from all over the world have played at the festival. It attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Cape Breton Island each year. For nine days in October, Cape Breton Island is home to a one of a kind celebration of music and culture, the festival presents dozens of celtic concerts all over this beautiful island. There is a great line-up of events, workshops, visual art exhibitions, and a nightly Festival Club. Each year, artists travel from places like Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, Denmark, Brittany, Spain, Cuba, and Germany as well as from across the USA and Canada to join the finest of Cape Breton's musicians, singers, dancers, storytellers and tradition-bearers for the annual fall celebration.

The festival takes place in the fall when the leaves are changing colors, so its a great opportunity to photograph our fall foliage. Try to fit a trip aroung the Cabot Trail into your schedule, its truely breathtaking at this time of year. The Lake can be access thru either the St Peters Canal or thru the mouth of the Lake at Big Bras D'Or, a stop over in Baddeck is a mustthat you will not regret. What is my bra size? Help please. I was at walmart wanting to find out size for hanes bras so I can buy online?
Before I was pregnant, I was a 34B. Now, I am wearing a 34C. I tried on the same style bra the seamless shaping underwire in different sizes. I tried on a 34B to double check that I am not that size and the cups and band was too small. I tried on a 34C and the cup fit fine but the band was tight (the middle hook). I tried a 36B and 36C and the cups were a bit big there was a small gap but the band fit fine. I dont whether if it was the style cause I usually wear wireless bras and fit a 34C in ambrielle and warner. My favorite bra is Warner's Invisible Bliss Wire-Free Bra in a 34C and that fits perfectly. I dont even need to adjust the straps. Here are my measurements Under my arms 36 Bust 39 Under bust 31 Thank you for reading and answers!

Help with bra sizing please?
I had myself measured at Victoria's Secret and my frame measures 26 and my bust 30. I ended up buying a 32A, but its doesn't fit properly. The straps fall after adjusting, the center does not lie flat against my breastbone, it rides up in the back, when I raise my arms my breasts fall out of the bottom, and my breasts don't "sit" in the cups. Also, when the hook is on the last loop I can fit 2 of my hands width wise behind the bra with a little extra room, which to my knowledge you should only be able to fit 1 hand. I thought this style just didn't work for me and bought a 32A racerback, wireless bra, but the cups don't cover my breasts entirely. So I tried a 30A (not able to find 30B in store) and the band was still too big. So here's what I've figured. If I can fit two of my hands' widths behind the bra wearing the 32A on the last hook (knowing that my hands are 4" in width) my band needs to be 4" shorter, so I should be atleast a 28. But since my band was on the last hook do I need to drop down to a 26 so it will fit on the first hook? Also, I know that 30B/28C/26D are sister sizes to 32A. Are the depths of the cups the same on all of these? If so, as I stated above the cups on any 32A bra I've tried aren't deep enough for my breasts. So would I need to go up a cup size? And therefore try 30C/28D/26DD? The reason I need specifics is because I can only find 30Bs online, not in store, and I don't want to have to pay to ship and reship something that's not going to fit. And any other size I'm going to have to special order and won't get my money back if it doesn't fit and their not cheap. Kayteee, don't bother responding if you're not going to read the entire thing. The cups on a 32AA are smaller than the cups on a 32A and I said the cups on a 32A are too small, so there's no way that would work. Plus I already said the 32 band size is too big.
